The hygeine hypothesis is well known, if children lack exposure to dirt and microbes then they are more likely to develop allergies and asthma. It has been further theorised that endotoxins found on the surface of many bacteria cause the immune system to be hardened to exposure from allergens. Recently it has been found that the enzyme A20 is the crucial player in this theory, as without it the body cannot utilise the endotoxins. It has further been noted that the enzyme A20 is important in telling a new-born's immune system to not overreact to microbes. Endotoxins and the enzyme are both needed for the immune system to not overreact. How does this relate to the A level course; it shows that enzymes are crucial for all processes within the body.
